To have a general appreciation for the mechanisms available for the defense of the respiratory tree.
To understand the means by which inhaled particles and toxic gases are deposited in the tracheobronchial tree (sedimentation, inertia. diffusion) and the airway reflexes available for response (cough, sneeze).
To understand the function of the mucociliary escalator in clearing the airways of inhaled materials.
To appreciate the various roles of pulmonary macrophages.
To be familiar with the various metabolic functions of the lungs.
